Last week I shared how much I love my newest scissors from Karen Kay Buckley. I ordered the small and large size last spring. Confession: I am being tempted to add the medium size to my collection. The small ones traveled with me this summer on our journey around the western states. I kept these in my little travel bag, another one of Karen's items that I love, which keeps all of my applique supplies neat, organized, and protected. The scissors come with a little protective cover that actually "snaps" into place so I never had an issue with it falling off. Let me tell you, you need that cover as the tips of these little scissors are very, very sharp. I mainly used them for snipping threads and making little cuts as I appliqued my pieces in place. The pair they replaced were about the same size, but the handles did not give me much room to slip my fingers in. These are generously sized for comfort as you cut. The larger scissors are the ones I bragged about the other day when I shared the Wildflower Quilt I am working on. I mentioned that the handles were quite comfortable in part because they are softer than anything else I have. Notice in the photos below how they "squish." I hope you can see in the following photos why I like the blade covers so much. If you look closely there is a little ridge that enables the cover to snap into place. Now for the fun part. Through the generosity of Karen Kay Buckley one lucky reader of this blog will win a pair of her Perfect Scissors for their very own. All you have to do is leave me a comment in which you answer two questions:
1-Piecing, Applique, or Both 2-How many UFO's are floating around your quilt space. Bonus: Invite your friends and ask them to leave your name in their comments. This will earn you an extra entry. I would also love to visit your blog if you have one so be sure and share a link when you comment. (This does not earn you any extra entries.) Due to shipping restrictions I have to limit this sweepstake to residents of the United States. The winning name will be drawn from all available entries and announced on Thursday September 25th. The winner will be contacted by email. (Again, I am in now way associated with Karen Kay Buckley, I have simply fallen in love with her products and want to share with you the things that make my quilting life better.) Taking life a stitch at a time, Debra I am making good progress on the wildflower quilt. As I mentioned in my last post Mckenna Ryan designed the quilt. She named it Petals of My Heart. Anyone who has gone hiking with me knows how much I love wildflowers. I was inspired by one of my dear aunts to learn the names of the flowers I came across out in the woods. They are like special little friends that I look forward to seeing whenever I wander along a path somewhere. They evoke memories of special places and times and sometimes provide a delightful surprise when they appear someplace unexpected. Now on to the show...Blocks 14 and 15 As I continue to work on the blocks I continue to think about how I am going to quilt this. It is going to be a decorative quilt that I hang on a wall so I am considering just doing some background quilting rather than going around each and every tiny piece of applique like I do with my baby quilts. But then I wonder if I am doing an injustice to this lovely quilt. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. As I have been thinking about hand quilting I came across this video for a hoopless method. I am intrigued. Taking life a stitch at a time,
Debra
This was the first time I had a chance to really put some new scissors I purchased last spring to the test. These are Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect Scissors and they are perfect. These scissors have a serrated blade. I will never use anything else again for cutting tiny pieces for applique projects. These scissors are sharp! To the tip. They really do grip the fabric in a way that regular scissors do not. I have lot's of intricate cuts to make with this quilt and I am much happier with how these are handling the job. Added bonus, my fingers fit into the large handles very comfortably, not all squished like my old ones, and with my somewhat arthritic fingers that is a very good thing. The handles are rather squishy too instead of hard plastic or metal which also aid in making these the most comfortable scissors I own. (I am not being payed in any way to recommend these.) Now back to the quilt. I finished block thirteen! I do not know if I will ever tackle a McKenna Ryan quilt again. I enjoy working on the blocks, I love her patterns, but I am NOT looking forward to quilting it. That has been my big drawback to sticking with this one. How in the world to quilt it? Now time to admire the fabrics for Block 14 before I get back to tracing and cutting. Ooh, purples and gold... Taking life a stitch at a time,
