New on the Site this week: Philippians 4:4- Time to rejoice in the Lord... Philippians 4:5a - Paul says that all men should know us by this... Fabric basket tutorials for the quilt studio - I came across some great tutorials for organizing the studio I hope you enjoy. Good Reads from around the Web Ordinary: The New Radical- Everything has to have an exclamation point to catch our attention these days. For many of us, the worst word in our vocabulary is “ordinary.” Who wants a bumper sticker that announces to the neighborhood, “My child is an ordinary student at Bubbling Brook Elementary”? Who wants to be an ordinary person in an ordinary town, a member of an ordinary church with ordinary friends and callings? Our life has to count. We have to leave our mark, a legacy, make a difference. And this has to be something that we can manage, measure, and maintain. We have to live up to our own Facebook profile. - See more at: http://www.whitehorseinn.org/blog/2013/08/31/ordinary-the-new-radical/#sthash.cXlGv8ws.dpuf Telling Your Story- A good one to ponder. For many years now we have been hearing that all we need to do to witness is tell our story. We like that, it is safe and we are very familiar with the subject, but what makes our story "true" in an age when everyone's truth is said to have as much validity as mine? A Note to Those Who Criticize-"I have a strange relationship with you. I dread you and I need you. There will be times when I am right and you are wrong. But there will be many times when you are right and I am wrong." Pastor Thom Rainer has some great points for all of us to consider...especially for those of us who like him are thin-skinned introverts at heart. And this one is just pure fun... puffer fish circles- An article describing what has been discovered about structures on the seabed. God's creation still offers up wonderful surprises and the video More from our summer adventures: We had a wonderful visit with my brother and his family in the Olympia area. Fun times! Hope you have a great weekend!

New on the site this week: It feels good to be back in the writing saddle with you. I hope you will join me as I resume my look at Philippians. We are on the home stretch now. -Eagerly Waiting - The Lord is coming back. How does that knowledge affect the way we live our day to day? Living in Harmony-You know, the problem with doing this SOAP method of study? You cannot skip over the little details...these verses were quite convincting. Things I liked from around the web: The Antidote to Anemic Worship- Albert Mohler presents an interesting point about what worship should be. You might be surprised. -Make the Bible Your Native Tongue Tim Kimmel....this is a must read. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus...Glory A friend shared this video, a drama imagining what God has to say about the excuses we make. And on the lighter side: This is for all you "hand-raisers" out there...Worship advice from Tim Hawkins ***************************************************************************************************************************** We had a wonderful time this summer...boy was it busy. Moving the sons to Colorado, one in July and one in August; visiting family in Washington and Oregon; camping, hiking, sightseeing, sampling clam chowder along the coast. This was the first vacation since we became parents that Ken and I were on our own. We still like each other- a very good thing to find out at this point in our marriage. I had asked for prayer in July as I intended to begin writing my first book. That is going well. I think I need more time in the woods to finish it though. What can I say? I thoroughly enjoyed settling down along mountain streams or quiet woods to just write. I love the long life on my new computer battery...six to eight hours between charges is great but I did get asked on several occasions by passers by if I had internet. The places we go do not even have phone service so no, no internet...they would look so excited and then a little depressed when they learned I was not connected to the outside world. Makes me wonder f the woods are going to get even lonelier in the future because people cannot disconnect from their devices. (I did have to make several trips to get access however as my job still required my attention on a regular basis. It is great to have a job that you can take with you on the road. Students around the globe are continuing to find those asteroids we are looking for and it is fun to be a part of their excitement during the hunt.) This week we are getting back into our routines. Back in the office. Hallways and classrooms full of eager students ready to add to their knowledge of math and science. The nights are getting cooler, even here in Texas...it won't be long until fall, then winter...another year is zipping by. Our chicks have flown the coop...while it may seem like a season of endings it is also a season of beginnings. Keeping my eyes on the prize, towards the goal of my upward call...it is tempting to focus on what is past, but I remember reading somewhere that we are to forget what lies behind and press on...oh yes, I think that was something I wrote about not long ago. Blessings! Deb More photos from Shoshone Falls, ID...July 2013 |
